Teletalk to roll out 5G network in Dhaka city soon

Teletalk, the lone state-owned mobile phone operator, is going to launch 5G technology commercially in Dhaka metropolitan area soon.

Teletalk Bangladesh Limited is executing the project at Tk 236.54 crore.

The implementation period of the project is from July 2022 to December 2023. The proposal of the Posts and Telecommunications Department said that the project will be placed for final approval before the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), on Tuesday.

Posts and Telecommunications Department’s Joint Secretary (Planning) Md Musleh Uddin confirmed the news to Business Insider Bangladesh.

The primary project areas of 5G network are: Prime Minister’s Office, important government buildings, Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Banani, Gulshan, Cantonment and Uttara Police Station constituencies in Dhaka North City Corporation and Bangabhaban, Bangladesh Secretariat, Motijheel, Ramna, Shahbagh and Dhanmondi police stations and commercial establishments of Dhaka South City Corporation, respectively.

According to the target announced by the government, commercial 5G technology will be introduced in some areas in Dhaka Metropolitan at the initial phase for providing mobile services based on 5G technology during 2021-23. This will raise awareness of 5G technology among the users and other mobile operators will feel encouraged.

The prime activities of the project: The existing 200 4G BTS sites of Teletalk in Dhaka city will be equipped with 5G technology based telecom equipment, tower and room infrastructure will be renovated. Also the BTS will have increased power connection capacity, increased rectifier and battery capacity etcetera.

Installation of microwave radio equipment at 50 sites and ISM platform with 100,000 customer capacity will be installed under the project. Necessary upgradation and expansion of the existing core network system will be done, the proposal said.
