Bangladesh is all set to enter into the fifth-generation (5G) data service era from Sunday, said Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar.

He informed the matter Saturday at a press conference at the secretariat.

The Prime Minister’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed Joy will virtually inaugurate the 5G services, he said.

Primarily, Teletalk will launch the service in some areas of the country including the capital, said Mustafa Jabbar.

“In the capital, the areas covered under the 5G services are the Prime Minister’s Office, Dhanmondi 32, secretariat , Manik Mia Avenue, while Savar and Tungipara will be under the service out of Dhaka,” said the minister.

Later, the 5G service will be available in the important areas of the capital. And after the 5G spectrum auction in 2022, three other private mobile service providers will launch the service, added Mustafa Jabbar.

However, to avail the service, the existing 4G SIM of Teletalk needs to be converted into the 5G. Besides, the handset also needs to be 5G enabled to get the service. The 5G service is not applicable for any voice call.
