Dhaka stocks end flat, turnover sinks further

Dhaka stocks closed flat on Monday after a rough trade that saw the turnover sinking by 21 percent to a 50-session low.

On this day, the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) transaction started marginally higher. After a see-saw trade, the benchmark index of the DSE went 11 higher before the mid-session. However, the index soon fell into a downward trajectory as investors opted for booking modest profits to wipe out the early-hour gains to end the day marginally lower.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange DSE, declined 0.54 points or 0.008 percent to settle at 6218.30 as against 6220.26 points in the previous trading session. The DSE Shariah Index (DSES) fell 0.63 points or 0.05 percent to finish at 1359.24. The DSE 30 Index, comprising blue chips, dropped by 0.04 points or 0.002 percent to close at 2221.72.

Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, sank by 21.14 percent and stood at Tk 257.63 crore at the end of the day. It was Tk 326.72 crore at the previous session on Monday.

Shares of the 308 issues were traded on the day, of which 36 closed in green, 1250 in red and 152 showed no price movement.

RUPALILIFE was the day’s best performer on the day, posting a gain of 5.84 percent. POPULARLIF was the second-best gainer (3.48 percent), followed by SPCERAMICS (3.43 percent), PRAGATILIF (3.26 percent), and GEMINISEA (3.10 percent).

On the other hand, BGIC had the sharpest fall, shedding 7.35 percent, followed by BDLAMPS (-2.92 percent), APEXFOOT (-2.60 percent), MONNOCERA (-2.23 percent), and ITC (-1.18 percent).

SPCERAMICS was the most traded by value with its shares worth Tk 15.77 crore changing hands on the day. BSC, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 10.49 crore followed by GENEXIL at 9.93 crore, OLYMPIC at Tk 9.66 crore, and SEAPEARL at Tk 8.15 crore.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) ended slightly higher with the CSE All Share Price Index - CASPI -gaining 0.28 points to settle at 18360.50 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX adding 0.22 points to close at 11005.59.

Of the 122 issues traded, 46 declined, 24 advanced and 52 issues remained unchanged on the CSE. The port city's bourse traded 42.85 lakh shares and mutual fund units with a turnover of Tk 46.91 crore.
