The incident of road accidents is on the rise as five people including a child were killed and two others sustained injuries as a bus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Shajahanpur upazila of the district on Thursday noon.

Of the deceased, four were identified as auto-rickshaw driver Hazrat Ali, 50, its passengers--Nurnabi Badsha, 60, Golam Rabbani Badsha, 60, Afsana Mimi, 5, and a 25-year-old unidentified woman.

They were hailing from several upazilas in the district, according to Abbas Ali, assistant sub-inspector of Koigari Police Outpost.

He said the accident took place around noon when a Dhaka-bound bus hit an oncoming auto-rickshaw in the area, leaving four people dead on the spot and two critically injured.

The injured persons were rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital where doctors declared one of them dead, said the police official.

Following the death, a group of angered people set fire to the bus, said the ASI.

Mohammad Ali, a sub-inspector of Shajahanpur Police Station, said on information they rushed to the spot and took the situation under control.

The district administration announced giving Tk 20,000 to the families of each deceased for their burial.

The incidents of road accidents are on the rise as road crashes claimed around 585 lives across the country in January of the current year, according to Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKM).

Besides, the BJKM in a separate report claimed earlier that at least 9,951 people were killed and 12,356 sustained injuries in 6,749 road accidents across the country in 2022, which is the highest in the last eight years.

The roadway accidents increased by 19.89 percent while the fatalities increased by 27.43 percent in 2022 compared to that of the previous year, Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of the BJKM, revealed the data at a press conference held at Dhaka Reporters' Unity on January 2.

A total of 10,858 people were killed and 12,875 others injured in 7,617 road, rail and waterways accidents across the country in 2022, he said.
