The country’s leading mobile operator Grameenphone has been able to restore its network after the disruption for over two hours since 11.45 am on Thursday.

Grameenphone customers were facing mobile service disruption in many parts of the capital Dhaka and its adjoining areas since noon on Thursday due to the fibre cut during road maintenance work in Gazipur, Tangail and lSirajganj areas.

But, the network has been restored and all the issues over the disruption in the mobile network of Grameenphone have already been resolved, said an official of the Grameenphone.

Earlier in the day, the Grameenphone subscribers in different parts of Dhaka and its adjoining area were lodging complaints through social media for not getting access to the Grameenphone network.

Grameenphone customers from different parts of Dhaka, including Dhanmondi, Panthapath, Farmgate, and Mohammadpur areas, said on their social media that they were getting access to call other GP subscribers.

While talking to the reporter, an official of Grameenphone said fibre cables at 3 locations -- two in Tangail and one in Sirajganj were damaged and the disruption was caused due to this.

The official apologised for this temporary network disruption and said they are working to restore service immediately as a team is working to resolve the glitch.

In June last year Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) regulator placed an indefinite suspension on the SIM card sale of the Grameenphone for the operator's failure to provide quality service.

Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar has said that the Grameenphone is not providing quality service to its users despite repeated calls to do so.

“The telecom company has no intention to provide quality service, as it is not doing anything to fix the problems that its subscribers are facing,” he said.

“The BTRC placed the sale of Grameenphone SIM cards on indefinite suspension as we do not want new users to face the same problems,” he added.

Later on January 3 this year, the government lifted the ban on GP SIM card sales.
