Amazon founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark are set to be passengers on his company Blue Origin's first crewed flight to space in July. Their journey will begin on July 20.

In an Instagram post, Bezos said the pair will join the winner of an online auction for a seat on the autonomous spacecraft, with bidding currently sitting at $2.8 million. The New Shepard rocket flies to the edge of space, where passengers will experience "a few minutes of weightlessness and an unbeatable view of Earth" before returning to a parachute-assisted landing in Texas.

One of the world's richest men, Jeff Bezos, says he'll fly off into space next month on a rocket from his company, Blue Origin.

He's one of several billionaires who have been investing huge sums of money in their rocket startups, but Bezos will be the first to actually travel into space on a rocket developed by his own company.

If the space race was once about the two Cold War superpowers, it's now about billionaires. Jeff Bezos is going to space, but Elon Musk and Richard Branson aren't far behind.

Global insurers are still in the early stages when it comes to covering liabilities surrounding space travel. Life insurers do not ask about space tourism or exclude it from their coverage.

I'm shocked but delighted by this turn of events. This is about living your dreams, following your passion, and living life on your own terms.

It's also a great way to one-up your archrival.

Stay tuned for an announcement from Elon Musk by the end of the week.

Jeff Bezos is going to space.

The billionaire and his younger brother, Mark, will join the first passenger flight of his space company, Blue Origin.

The flight is scheduled for July 20, the anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing and just 15 days after Bezos is set to resign as CEO of Amazon.

Want to join him? Bidding for an open seat on New Shepard ends Saturday and has already reached $2.8 million as of Monday morning. The funds raised will be donated to Blue Origin's foundation, Club for the Future.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos will go into space on July 20.

Bezos founded Blue Origin in 2000. And after 21 years, his company is preparing to take its first crew into space. Bezos and his brother will be on that flight.

"Ever since I was five years old, I've dreamed of traveling to space," Bezos said on Instagram. "On July 20, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend.

Jeff Bezos is always on the cutting edge of progress. I am not sure I am ready for space travel yet, but for those of you ready to head into space it looks like the opportunities are coming. It is pricey now, but I am sure with the flywheel in full effect Jeff will find a way to make it affordable for many.

Here's a new one: Jeff Bezos is launching himself into space next month, alongside his brother and the winning bidder for a seat on Blue Origin's first human space launch.

The move would make Bezos the first of the billionaire space giants to ride into a rocket he's helped develop. Elon Musk has yet to announce plans to travel on a SpaceX rocket, while Richard Branson has said he plans to be among the first passengers on Virgin Galactic's rocket-powered plane later this year.
