India on Sunday confirmed its fifth case of Omicron variant Covid-19.

The infection was reported in a 37-year-old man who arrived in Delhi from Tanzania and was admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) of that city.

The case is also the first-known infection of Omicron variant to be reported from Delhi.

Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director at LNJP Hospital, said that the Omicron patient had a sore throat and fever initially. The patient is also suffering from body pain and weakness, but no drop in oxygen level has been recorded, reports India Today.

Earlier, cases with the Omicron variant have already been detected in Karnataka, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The Omicron strain, detected first in South Africa, has been marked as a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
