11 organisations to be awarded for contribution to textile sector

The Ministry of Textiles and Jute will recognise 11 organisations with awards for their contribution to the development of the national textile sector leading to export growth.

Textiles and Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak informed this at a press conference marking the National Textiles Day at his office at the secretariat in Dhaka, reports BSS.

Secretary of the Ministry Md Abdur Rauf and Department of Textiles DG Md Nuruzzaman, among others, were present at the conference.

Nanak said the theme of the day is ‘Enrich country in smart textiles- Bangabandhu’s Bangladesh’.

He said the history of the textile industry in Bangladesh is ancient and glorious. The textile sector is an integral part of the country's economy, society and culture, he added.

The minister said, "The government has taken initiatives to boost the capacity and modernise the textile sector in order to attract investments. As a part of mass promotion, 'National Textile Day' is being celebrated on December 4 every year with aims to increase the demand both locally and in international markets."

Nanak, also an Awami League Presidium Member, said most of the country's export income comes from the textile sector. The textile sector is also playing an important role in the country's socio-economic development, poverty alleviation, women's empowerment and employment generation, he said.

He said that the main program of the National Textile Day will be held at the Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) on February 27.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin is expected to inaugurate the ceremony as the chief guest.

The eleven organisations selected for the award are – Bangladesh Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), Bangladesh Specialized Textile Mills and Power Loom Industries Association (BSTMPIA), Bangladesh Cotton Association (BCA), Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA), Bangladesh Terry Towel and Linen Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BTTLMA), Bangladesh Textile University, Bangladesh Garment Accessories and Packaging Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGAPMA), Bangladesh Embroidery Manufacturers and Exporters Association and Bangladesh Tanti Samity.
