The government has given permission to six more companies to import eggs in a bid to control the price hike of eggs in the country’s local markets.

The six companies will import six crore eggs as part of the government's efforts to control the price hike of the cheapest source of protein for common people, according to a source of the commerce ministry.

The six companies are Cheese Gallery, Popular Trade Syndicate, M S Ripa Enterprises, S M Corporation, BDS Corporation and M/s Zaynur Traders and each of the companies will import one crore eggs,

Earlier on September 18, the government allowed Tiger Enterprise, Mrs Mim Enterprise, Arnob Trading and Prime Energy to import four crore eggs each on the same ground.

Amid the skyrocketing price hike of eggs, the government on September 14 fixed the price per piece of egg at Tk 12.

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi on that day said that the government would allow egg importation unless the price comes down and the traders comply with the fixed price.

To make the efforts a success, the National Directorate of Consumers Rights Protection carried out raids at different markets in the capital Dhaka but failed to enforce the government-fixed price of eggs.
