Two wholesale kitchen markets will be built in the capital Dhaka following the model of a market in China's Beijing to ensure the overall facilities of the city dwellers.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam came up with the announcement after visiting a kitchen market in Beijing, the sprawling capital of China, said a press release here on Monday.

“We are discussing the matter with the authorities of the wholesale market in Beijing and they assured us to share their concept with us to build the markets in the capital Dhaka,” Atiqul said when he was visiting one of the large wholesale markets in Beijing on Monday.

has created an instance by setting up a market that ensures around 80 percent supply of fresh kitchen items to the city dwellers in Beijing, Atiqul said, adding that it is possible to set up a similar market in Dhaka following the model.

According to the plan, there will be two wholesale kitchen markets and one will be set up in Dhaka North and another one in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in line with the directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

After setting up the two markets, plying of goods-laden trucks will be prohibited to help ease the traffic jam in the capital Dhaka. Apart from this, the city dwellers will also be able to consume fresh vegetables and agro-products thanks to the market, he said.

Underscoring the seed for cooperation from all quarters to make the capital Dhaka a beautiful and loveable city, Atiqul said a part of the Kawran Bazar Kitchen Market will be relocated to the kitchen market built by the DNCC in Gabtoli area.

And another part will be shifted to Jatrabari area under the DSCC, said DNCC the mayor, adding that a master plan has already been prepared to make the efforts a success.

“We will hold talks with the traders of Kawran Bazar market to take a decision on where the vegetable, fish and meat market to be set up for ensuring the welfare of the consumers,” he said.

“There will be a challenge when we will begin the work. But we all will have to come forward,” he said and assured that the market will be equipped with modern facilities and a small-scale power plant will be set up there to ensure its smooth power supply.

Letters have already been sent to the respective ministries to accelerate the project work, said the DNCC mayor.

A modern market requires uninterrupted electricity, cold storage and a temperature control system to ensure the proper quality of food and vegetable items and all these facilities will be provided to the traders, he said.
