Chattogram Customs House is now in troubled water over 6,500 tonnes of goods to be demolished as it did not get any place to dump it for a long time.

The rotten or expired goods which were imported but not released anyhow occupies an important port-space. Besides, the port activities also being hampered for its bad smell.

“We wish to dump 6500 tonnes goods in 326 containers at a place of Halishahar area in Chattogram, for which we asked approval from the Department of Environment,” said Faisal Bin Rahman, Chattogram customs House deputy commissioner.

The department, however, is yet to give the approval showing a cause of environmental impact, he told the Business Insider Bangladesh, adding; “It asked us to give the details of goods which are on the list for demolishing.”

Rahman, however, informed that a meeting is scheduled to held this week in this regard, from which we can get a decision.

The customs house has no own land for the dumping, he said, adding that it could manage several places to demolished such goods several times in the Chattogram city Since 2015.

Around 507 metric tonnes of such goods was demolished at the Heidelberg Cement Factory in Chattogram in 2017, 528 metric tonnes at Ananda Bazar Dumping Yard of Chattogram City Corporation and Bijoy Nagar in 2019, 1000 metric tonnes at the same Yard in 2020 and about 4807 tonnes of goods was dumped at Halishahar Toll Road of the city.

The customs authority for this time requested the environment department to allow it to dump the goods at their selected place like previous ways, but the department denied it.

Instead, the department asked the customs house to use the city corporation dumping yard, which roads are now too narrow to carry the goods container for which the customs are reluctant to dump there.

“We are asking customs authority to finalize a land with the help of the city Corporation,” M Nurullah Nuri, director of the environment department of Chattogram said. “But they yet to do it.”

“We cannot approve any other place if the customs house tries to exclude the city corporation,” he said.

Meanwhile, an expert team from the department had visited Chattogram in this regard and conducted the feasibility test twice.
