Star-studded Mohammedan Sporting Club stayed in the title contention of the ongoing Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League (DPL) T20 when they secured an exciting nine-run win via D/L method over Old DOHS Sports Club in the rain-hit 8th round match at Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Protisthan No 4 Ground in Savar on Sunday.

Mohammedan played without their regular skipper Shakib Al Hasan, who has been suspended for three matches and fined for showing aggressive behaviour towards the umpire in Mohammedan’s last match against Abahani on Friday.

Therefore, all-rounder Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury led Mohammedan in absence of Shakib on Sunday.

However, in the rain-marred game, Mohammedan recovered from the brink of defeat to snatch a dramatic win to secure their second successive win and jumped to the fourth spot of the table.

Mohammedan’s crucial victory came courtesy of brilliant innings by wicketkeeper-batsman Irfan Sukkur who struck 68 from 42 balls under pressure after Mohammedan openers made 36 for the opening wicket. His innings was laced by three fours and five monster sixes.

A lower-order collapse, however, saw Mohammedan finished 154 for five in 20 overs.

In response, Old DOHS Sports Club’s top orders seemed to be taking the game away with Anisul Islam Emon (23), Rakin Ahmed (17) and Mahmudul Hasan Joy involved in substantial partnerships before rain stopped the game.

After the rain interruption, DOHS was set to chase a revised target of 125 runs from 16 overs under the D/L method.

However, DOHS showed resistance but could put on 115 for four in 16 overs. Skipper Mohaiminul Khan was not out on 20. Shuvagata Hom bagged two wickets for Mohammedan.

Mohammedan’s wicketkeeper Irfan Sukkur was adjudged the player of the match.

Meanwhile, a classy 71 from middle-order batsman Fazle Mahmud set up Prime Doleshwar Sporting Club to a five-wicket victory over Partex Sporting Club at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

Chasing a manageable target of 135 for victory, the player of the match Fazle Mahmud’s swashbuckling 71 off 57 balls and little but vital contributions from middle orders helped Doleshwar comfortably reach their victory target with four balls to spare. Fazle hit seven fours and three sixes in his vital knock.

A battling 44 from opener Hasanuzzaman had helped Partex reach 134 for seven after put into bat first.

On the other hand, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club pummeled Legends of Rupganj by six wickets by the DLS system at BKSP Ground 3.

Nurul Hasan led from the front with a match-winning 30-ball 44 as Jamal secured two crucial points.

The winners of the game came out with a disciplined bowling performance after winning the toss to limit Legends of Rupganj’s innings at 137 for six in 20 overs. Sabbir Rahman top-scored 41 for Rupganj.

Pacers Salauddin Sakil and Shykat Ali took two wickets apiece.

In reply, Jamal could reach 127 for four in 18 overs before rain halted the game. Later Jamal was announced the winner.
