Govt extends lockdown by another week

The government has decided to go for another weeklong lockdown after ending the ongoing one on April 21, as the coronavirus situation keeps worsening in the country.

The decision was take in a meeting of the secretaries held with Cabinet Division Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam in the chair this noon.

Earlier at a press conference from his official residence on Parliament Complex premises, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the government is thinking about extending the nationwide lockdown by another week.

The government at the same time is thinking of easing the lockdown for the sake of livelihood of people before Eid, Quader also read transport and bridges minister said.

Besides, the National Technical Advisory Committee on Coronavirus in its 31st meeting last night recommended extending the ongoing nationwide lockdown for another week as the Covid-19 situation in the country continues to worsen.

Hossain, state minister for Public Administration, told the media that the summery of the recommendations will be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by today and a notification in this regard will be made public soon after her approval.

The government imposed a loose nationwide lockdown for one week from April 5 as part of its move to contain the spike in both coronavirus infections and fatalities.

Later it enforced a weeklong all-out lockdown from April 14 which will continue till April 21.

Bangladesh registered a single-day death of 102 from coronavirus in 24 hours until Sunday morning, breaking all the previous records.
