New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will not be playing the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh due to an elbow tendon injury, coach Gary Stead said on Tuesday.

Because of this injury, he missed the second test against India in Mumbai. India won that match and the series as well by 1-0.

Stead said, "We're trying not to put a timeframe on it. It's all about the load on the elbow and when you're in the test arena, the extra time in training and batting as well is what tipped him over the edge, I guess.

"Kane's doing it tough, don't get me wrong. He hates the thought of missing any cricket, let alone test cricket for New Zealand," he added.

Stead sounded disappointed after losing to India, especially for the first innings of the second Test. Kiwis were bowled out for 62, the lowest ever against India in a Test match by any team.

But Stead was happy with the first Test’s result in Kanpur, which was drawn and earned them some championship points.

He mentioned, "India were just better than us in their conditions."

"A lot of teams come here and struggle, so to pick up any points from here ... was a really good achievement," he added.
