Barcelona sacked their head coach Ronald Koeman after a disappointing 1-0 defeat vs Rayo Vallecano on Wednesday evening.
Barca have won only two of their last seven games under Koeman, which included losing to Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico at Camp Nou.
In a statement, Barcelona announced, “The president of the club, Joan Laporta, informed him (Koeman) of the decision after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad on Thursday.”
“FC Barcelona wishes to thank him for his service to the Club and wishes him all the best in his professional career,” the statement said.
Koeman at his 58, was appointed as manager in August 2020, taking over from Quique Setien and was in charge as head coach for 14 months at Nou Camp. He led Barcelona to the Copa del Rey trophy, but the side slumped to third in La Liga after a poor end to the 2020-21 season.
This situation has raised the possibility of the team failing to qualify for next season’s Champions League, which would have enormous consequences for the club’s already dire financial situation.
Speaking after Wednesday’s defeat, Koeman said, “The team has lost balance in the squad, lost very effective players, which shows. In recent years other clubs have strengthened every season and we haven’t, which also shows.”
However, Barca’s former midfielder and club legend Xavi, who is now manager of Qatari side Al Sadd, is one of the favourites to replace Koeman.
