Former world champion Sri Lanka won comfortably against Bangladesh in a high-scoring T20 World Cup match in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.

Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who were dropped by Bangladeshi fielders, showed their class with the bat. Asalanka single handedly outplayed the Tigers.

He scored unbeaten 80 runs in 49 delevaries, while Rajapaksa scored 53 in just 31. They won the match with five wickets and seven balls to spare.

Earlier, Sri Lanka won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first. It was a really slow start for the Tigers.

In the first five overs Bangladesh just managed to score 38 runs. At the end of eight overs they bagged 58 runs for two wickets. One of those was Shakib’s wicket.

Then Mr. Dependable, Mushfiqur Rahim came to the middle. He remained unbeaten with a brilliant knock of 57 runs in just 37 balls.

Mohammad Naim played a vital role as well. He managed to get his half-century in 44 balls. Before going back to the pavilion he added 12 more runs to his name.

Though it was a slow start, Bangladesh put up a formidable total - 171 runs - on this Sharjah pitch.

It was a brilliant start from Nasum Ahmed with the ball. He picked up Kusal Perera’s wicket in his very first over. But the Sri Lankan batters were furious today, especially Charith Asalanka.

Shakib Al Hasan flopped with his bat, but he took two wickets in his second over and that made him the highest wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup with 39 wickets. But Mahmudullah opted to rest Shakib and brought part-timer Afif Hossain into the attack and that decision cost the Tigers a lot. Later, Mauhmudullah himself started bowling without using his two key bowlers - Shakib and Mustafizur. In the meantime, the match was gone beyond Bangladesh.
