Amid the ongoing economic and political crisis across the island nation, the Sri Lankan Ministry of Power & Energy introduced the National Fuel Pass for rationing fuel.

The fuel pass will allow the public to purchase a secured quota of fuel per week.

Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera announced that registrations are now open for the public to register for the service, reports Ceylon Today.

Individuals can visit www.fuelpass.gov.lk and provide the necessary details for registration.

Accordingly, one vehicle can be registered per National ID card and a QR code will be issued to each vehicle after registering and verifying the chassis number and other information.

Further, the Minister noted that the public can obtain fuel twice a week according to the last number of the vehicle number plate, using the relevant QR code.

Earlier, the island nation witnessed massive crisis for fuel, food and medicine as it went bankrupt and was unable to purchase from the international market for the shortage of foreign currency.

Following massive protests from the citizens, Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned as the president of the country. Prime Minister Ranil Wicremesinghe was sworn in as the acting President on Friday until the election of a president for the country by the parliament.
