During the clashes with the demonstrators and government supporters outside Colombo, a ruling-party parliament member died on Monday.

Besides, dozens of people were wounded in the violence erupted from the unrest and many of them were hospitalized.

Parliament Member Amarakeerthi Athukorala opened fire and critically wounded two people blocking his car in Nittambuwa, and was later found dead after trying to take refuge in a nearby building, said police, according to international media.

Thousands of Sri Lankan citizens took to the streets on the day across the curfew-bound island and targeted supporters of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

However, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa already has tendered his resignation from the postion.

Earlier in the day, the Rajapaksa loyalists had destroyed tents and placards of anti-government demonstrators camping outside the official residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The protestors were camping at the site since April 9.

In violence in the capital Colombo, at least 138 people were injured and admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, a spokeswoman for the hospital said.
