Call to give priority on thalassaemia test before marriage

Thalassemia is a deadly disease that is transmitted through parents, and it is important for every person who is planning to marry to have a thalassemia test, said speakers in a free thalassaemia carrier screening and awareness camp.

The camp was held recently with the collaboration of First Security Islami Bank and Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives (ideSHi) at Ruqayyah Hall in Dhaka University, reads a press release.

Thalassemia can be prevented if one thalassemia carrier does not marry another thalassemia carrier, the speakers said.

Dr Firdausi Qadri, laureate of Ramon Magsaysay Award 2021 and lead of Institute for Developing Science and Health Initiatives; Syed Waseque Md Ali, managing director of First Security Islami Bank; Prof Dr Emran Kabir Chowdhury, vice-chancellor of Cumilla University; Prof Dr Zeenat Huda, provost of Ruqayyah Hall; and Dr Sharmin Rumi Alim, Pro of Institution of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University, were present in the programme, the release added.
