Bangladesh has seen nearly 40 percent spike in Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning, amid the worsening situation.

The country recorded 96 deaths, up from just 69 a day ago, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Infection rate also reported relatively high at nearly 21 percent.

With 96, the death toll of the virus mounted to 9,987 while the total caseload reached 7, 03,170 in the country, said the DGHS.

Some 24,825 samples were tested at different government authorised laboratories across the country and of them, 5,185 samples were found positive for the virus in the same time.

In the meantime, as many as 5,333 patients who were undergoing treatment either at their houses or hospitals, were declared free from the infection, taking the total number of recovery to 5,91,299.

According to the updated statistics, the infection rate of the virus reaches 20.89 percent which was 18.29 percent on Tuesday, 20.59 percent on Monday, 19.81 percent on Sunday and 20.49 percent on Saturday.

The recovery rate stands at 84.09 percent which was 83.95 percent on Tuesday, 83.98 percent on Monday and 84.30 percent on Sunday.

Besides, the death rate of the virus remains static at 1.42 percent in proportion of the infection for the two consecutive days.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 29, 74, 850 deaths so far caused by the virus and 13, 81, 18, 578 cases worldwide.

The virus was detected first at Wuhan province of China in December 2019, since then Bangladesh recorded the first case of infection on March 8 last year and confirmed first death 10 days later in the same year.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the pilot Covid-19 vaccination drive formally on January 27.

Later, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque officially inaugurated the mass inoculation campaign across the country on February 7.
