Bangladesh reported its highest single-day coronavirus fatalities on Monday, surpassing Sunday’s figure.

The health authorities confirmed 83 deaths during the last 24 hours till Monday morning while the country recorded 78 fatalities from the virus on Sunday.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in a handout disclosed that a total of 7,201 people were infected with the virus at the same time.

With 83, the fatalities from the virus rose to 9,822 and the total number of caseload stood at 6, 91,957, the DGHS said.

Some 34,968 samples were tested at different government authorised laboratories across the country and of them, 7,201 samples were found positive for the virus.

In the meantime, as many as 4,523 patients who were undergoing treatment either at their houses or hospitals, were declared free from the infection, taking the total number of recovery to 5,81,113.

According to the updated statistics, the infection rate of the virus rose to 20.59 percent which was 19.81 percent on Sunday, 20.49 percent on Saturday, 23.57 percent on Friday, and 20.65 percent on Thursday.

The recovery rate stands at 83.98 percent which was 84.30 percent on Sunday while the death rate remains static at 1.42 percent in proportion of the infection.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 29, 51, 427 deaths so far caused by the virus and 13, 67, 42, 405 cases worldwide.

The virus was detected first at Wuhan province of China in December 2019, since then Bangladesh recorded the first case of infection on March 8 last year and confirmed first death 10 days later in the same year.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the pilot Covid-19 vaccination drive formally on January 27.

Later, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque officially inaugurated the mass inoculation campaign across the country on February 7.
