Bangladesh recorded six more deaths and 635 new cases of deadly coronavirus from different parts of the country including capital Dhaka in the last 24 hours ending 8:00am on Friday.

The total death toll of the virus rose to 8,441 while the total number of infection stood at 5, 49,184 in the country so far, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in a press release this afternoon.

According to the DGHS data, the number of new cases rose over 600 in the last three consecutive days which was below 600 in five weeks from January 25. Besides, the number of new cases dropped below 300 in the middle of February.

Some 13,710 samples were tested at different government authorised laboratories across the country and of them, 635 were found positive for the virus in the same period, the DGHS said.

In the meantime, a total of 676 patients, who were undergoing treatment either at their houses or hospitals, were declared free from the infection, taking the total number of recovery to 5, 01, 144, so far.

The updated official statistic shows the infection rate of the virus 4.63 percent which was 3.87 percent yesterday, recovery rate 91.24 percent while the death rate 1.54 percent in the same period.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 25, 83, 179 deaths so far caused by the virus and 11, 62, 93, 999 cases worldwide.

The virus was detected first at Wuhan province of China in December 2019, since then Bangladesh recorded the first case of infection on March 8 last year and first death on March 18 in the same year.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the pilot Covid-19 vaccination drive formally on January 27. Later, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque officially inaugurated the mass inoculation campaign across the country on February 7.

On the first day, the vaccination drive kicked off at 1,000 hospitals across the country including 47 in the capital simultaneously and the nationwide campaign is going on in a full swing.
