Once again Bangladesh has shown its resilience in tackling the coronavirus pandemic, indicated by moving five notches up in the Nikkei's Covid-19 Recovery Index.

Bangladesh ranked fifth out of 121 countries worldwide as of April 30, according to the latest ranking of the index.

In its previous episode of the index in March, Bangladesh was in the 13th position.

Among South Asian countries, Bangladesh grabbed the highest score of 80 points, followed by Nepal in 6th place with 79 points. Meanwhile, Pakistan ranked 23, Sri Lanka 31, and India 70.

The index assesses several factors including the country’s infection management and vaccination rates and social mobility. The index is updated at the end of each month.

Two Gulf countries Qatar and UAE shared the top spot, with ratings of 87. Cambodia and Rwanda were ranked in the following positions respectively.

Covid shock in Bangladesh has largely been brought under control as the country reported no Covid death for 16 straight days on Friday. However, 19 new coronavirus-related cases on the day.

The daily case positivity rate now stands at 0.55 percent, up from Thursday’s 0.18 percent which was the lowest since the virus spread out in Bangladesh in 2020.
