A Chattogram court on Thursday sent two customs officials to jail in a case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) over embezzlement of government revenue amounting to Tk 24.33 lakh.

The two customs officials are Rabiul Islam Mollah, suspended assistant revenue officer (section-B) of Chattogram Customs House, and Nasiruddin Mahmud, former revenue officer of the same organisation, reports UNB.

Chattogram Metropolitan District and Sessions Judge Sheikh Ashfaqur Rahman passed the order after they surrendered before the court in connection with the case, said ACC's lawyer Advocate Kazi Sanowar Ahmed Lavlu.

"The accused officials appeared before the court and appealed for bail but their appeal was denied and they were sent to jail rejecting their bail petition," said the lawyer.

According to the case statement, Dhaka's Royal Trade International, imported different items of electronic components in November, 2016, and handed over the responsibility to Neptune Trading Agency and Bonalata Shipping Agency for unloading the goods after paying revenue and completing other tasks. But the products are unloaded without verifying the papers and any physical examination.

After the investigation, ACC found the evidence of revenue evasion and embezzlement of Tk 24 lakh 33 thousand 502 in the incident.

Abu Sayeed, deputy director of ACC Chattogram-1 filed the case on November 24.
