BNP men locked into clashes with police in the capital’s Nayapaltan area on Tuesday, leaving a number of leaders and activists of the party injured.

The clash took place around 11:30am when the BNP men broke out a procession towards Kakrail crossing after the end of a rally in front of the headquarters.

BNP activists locked into the clash by throwing brickbats towards police as the law enforcers intercepted the procession.

At one stage, police charged batons on the BNP men and fired teargas canisters to disperse them.

Several hundred BNP leaders and activists started gathering in front of their central party office this morning to join the peace rally in protest against the recent communal violence in the country.

A huge number of law enforcers have been deployed in and around the area to avoid any untoward incident centering the programme.

Soon after the clash, BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy alleged that police obstructed their leaders and activists to join the rally and arrested many of them.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that police detained over 50 leaders and activists of his party before beginning of the rally.

Besides, while talking to the Business Insider Bangladesh, Mohammad Salauddin Mia, officer-in-charge of Paltan Police Station, said over 30 people were picked for their unlawful activities in the area.
