Lord Ahmad, British State Minister for Foreign Affairs for South Asia, United Nations and the Commonwealth called on the Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen at the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh in New York on Thursday.

They discussed climate change and wanted to sit again on the sideline of COP26 in Glasgow, next month.

COP26, is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference. It is scheduled to be held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland between 31 October and 12 November 2021.

Bangladesh is the President of the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF) while UK is the President of COP26.

Foreign Minister Momen also apprised Lord Ahmad of the steps taken by Bangladesh in the area of climate mitigation and adaptation.

He also suggested that private sector of UK could invest in different environment-friendly projects in Bangladesh, including in electrification of the conventional railway. Lord Ahmad appreciated the proactive leadership role of Bangladesh in the area of climate change.

The issue of Rohingya crisis was also discussed in the meeting. Foreign Minister Momen called on the international community, including UK, to take concrete actions for creation of conducive environment in Myanmar for sustainable return of Rohingyas to their homeland in Rakhine State.
