Dhaka North City Mayor Atiqul Islam has said private vehicle owners will have to pay additional levies to use roads in the city’s Gulshan and Baridhara area to reduce air pollution and traffic jam.

“If anyone wants to ply private vehicle in VIP areas like Gulshan and Banani, he or she will have to pay extra tax. It is possible to reduce air pollution and traffic jam by using public transports instead of private ones,” he said on Saturday.

His remarks came at a programme held at Malibagh-Khilgaon area, marking the world car-free day 2021, in the city.

The DNCC mayor said footpaths with large length are built in the city but these are occupied by unscrupulous people in many ways. On the other hand, pedestrians are forced to walk through the streets causing traffic jams, he added.

“We all will have to be sincere so that people can walk along the sidewalks or run a bicycle on the specified lane,” the DNCC mayor said.

Claiming that either a mayor or a councilor alone will not be able to protect the city from air pollution and traffic congestions, he said people irrespective of political beliefs will have to come forward for the welfare of the city dwellers.

“We will have to raise our voices against the illegal occupants to keep the trees and footpath free from grabbing,” he said.

No vehicles without route permit or fitness certificate will be allowed to run on the street in the city area, Atiqul said, expressing his vow to build the capital a healthy place and make it an illegal-occupation-and-extortion-free city.

Later, marking the day, the DNCC mayor led a colorful procession in Khilgaon area with people from all walks of life to make his efforts successful.
