Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque has expressed his optimism over locally producing coronavirus vaccines soon and said the process is underway.

“Our prime minister has instructed us to accelerate the vaccine production process locally and we are working on it. We will begin the vaccine production work very soon,” the health minister came up with the announcement during a question-answer session of the parliament on Wednesday.

While responding to a query of an opposition lawmaker, Maleque said the government has already injected 2.50 crore doses of coronavirus vaccine of which 1.50 crore people got their second doses.

Bangladesh will get 16 crore doses of vaccine and around five crore will be procured under COVAX programme, the health minister told the house.

Highlighting his government’s achievement in dealing with the coronavirus fallout, Maleque said the country’s health system has gained its ability during the pandemic to provide people with health services in need.

“We have become able to expand the vaccination activities to the grassroots and we saw people did not go abroad for treatment purposes during the pandemic,” he said.

The government has installed 120 central oxygen supply systems at different hospitals to accelerate the treatment facilities for the patients infected by the Covid-19, he said.

The government has done its best and thus the death toll declined to 35 on Tuesday while 1,500 people died in America during the same period, he said.
