Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam has expressed his sheer annoyance over gross violation of health rules at Gabtoli cattle head market and ordered authorities to intervene.

“We set up nine antigen test booths at nine cattle markets and three people have already been tested positive for coronavirus. Despite this, people are reluctant in maintaining health rules. It cannot happen at city corporation markets,” he said.

“If necessity arises, the market could be shut,” an anguished Atiqul said while talking to reporters after visiting Gabtoli animal market, the largest in the city, on Monday.

“I don’t feel well after visiting the market and this is the truth,” the Mayor said.

The DNCC mayor went to the market to oversee whether the health guidelines imposed in a bid to contain the spread of coronavirus in the cattle markets, are being maintained.

He also asked the leaseholders to run trading by maintaining health rules.

“We are taking stern action against the rules violators and we will go for hard line unless the rules are maintained strictly,” he said, adding respective magistrates will take action as per law.

As the Mayor left the market, the leaseholder was fined Tk 10 lakh for breaching lease rules and Covid-19 health rules.
