DSE investors lose Tk 7,931cr in 2 weeks

The bearish trend in the country’s stock market continues as investors look cautious amid rising economic and political uncertainty.

As a result, indices and the value of shares traded have been declining for the past several weeks making investors poorer than before.

Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) data showed the market capitalisation of the prime bourse decreased by about Tk 3,500 crore in the last week. At the same time, turnover also went down to almost half of the previous week.

The market capitalisation of DSE stood at Tk 7,63,625 crore at the end of the last week (Nov 24), down by Tk 3,454 crore from a week ago.

In the previous week, the market capitalisation of DSE shed Tk 4,477 crore, meaning DSE’s market valuation decreased by Tk 7,931 crore in two consecutive weeks.

Not only the indices and market cap but also the value of the shares traded also went down significantly.

The average daily transaction in DSE was more than Tk 1000 crore a few weeks ago, it now came down to below Tk 400 crore.

The DSE had a total turnover of Tk 2,068 crore last week, down by Tk 952 crore from the previous week.

Meanwhile, the benchmark index of DSE, the DSEX shed 50.88 points, or 0.81 percent, to finish the week at 6,215.

Among other DSE indices, the shariah-based DSES decreased by 10 points or 0.74 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 fell by 10 points or 0.47 percent.

Losers beat winners significantly as 23 gained in the week under review, while 80 lost and 275 remained unchanged.

Genex Infosys’s shares were the most traded on the DSE last week. During the week, the company’s share turnover was Tk 166.61 crore, which was 8.06 percent of the total turnover.

Shares of Orion Pharma came in the second place with a turnover of Tk 117.79 crore followed by Bashundhara Paper Mills, Navana Pharmaceuticals, Padma Life Insurance, Eastern Housing, Sea Pearl Beach Resort, Intraco Refueling, Summit Alliance Port and Square Pharmaceuticals.

Meanwhile, on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the overall index CASPI decreased by 153 points or 0.82 percent to 18,339 during the week and Tk 53.95 crore worth of stocks were traded.
