Dhaka stocks shed nearly 1% in midday trading

DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) lost 58 points or 0.88 percent at 12-10 pm amid the big bang of the trading of the government securities on Monday.

The two bourses – Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges have opened this new platform for general investors. Market analysts and investors think that bond trading will make the country’s secondary stock markets more vibrant and participatory though these securities failed to attract any buyers till 12-30 pm on Monday.

“Investors look very cautious as the economic situation is getting critical,” said a merchant banker. “Comments of high-ups on the economy also impacted the sentiment of the investors,” he added.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES was down by 11 points or 0.78 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 fell by 19.55 points or 0.82 percent.

Over Tk 925 crore worth of shares transacted so far in DSE, where Sonali Paper, Beximco Limited, Orion Pharma, IPDC Finance and Paper Processing were the top five traded stocks.

Earlier, on Thursday, DSEX increased by 24.67 points or 0.37 percent to settle the day at 6,569.
