Some 400 companies are listed in the country’s stock market, but shares of only a few companies are being traded on a large scale. This picture has been seen for the past few weeks.

Allegations of manipulation in the shares of these companies have also increased, which experts think is very dangerous for the stock market.

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) has also cautioned investors against investing in shares of many companies whose prices have risen abnormally. Still, some investors are leaning more towards those stocks.

According to DSE data, shares and units worth Tk 5,278 crore of 387 companies were traded on DSE last week. Of the shares, 40 percent are from only 10 or 2.5 percent companies.

Among these 10 companies, Orion Pharma’s shares were the most traded. Some 3,48,77,420 shares of the company changed hands for Tk 494.65 crore, which was 9.37 percent of the total transactions.

Other companies include Beximco Limited (7.02 percent), Eastern Housing (4.34 percent), Bangladesh Building Systems (3.55 percent), JMI Hospital (3.14 percent), BBS Cables (3.04 percent), Shinepukur Ceramics (2.57 percent), Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (2.31 percent), Coppertech Industries (2.27 percent) and Sonali Paper (2.05 percent).
