Stocks close week higher amid falling turnover

Dhaka stocks on Thursday maintained its winning streak for the second day to close the week slightly higher.

However, the turnover or the value of traded shares on the day was the lowest in the last 27 working days. On August 24, the transaction was less than this.

Thursday’s turnover was one-third compared to the current month’s highest single-day turnover.

Although all the indices ended the transaction in a positive position, the share and unit prices of most of the companies remained unchanged.

Market insiders said that such a situation has never happened in the market before. On the day, this market situation arose as more than 200 companies are locked in the floor price.

At the end of the day, DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka bourse increased by 16 points or 0.25 percent to 6,512.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES rose by 4.31 points or 0.30 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 was up by 7.28 points or 0.31 percent.

The DSE had a turnover of Tk 1,217 crore, which is Tk 267 crore less than the previous session.

On the day, shares of the 365 companies were traded, of which only 94 firms gained, 85 issues lost and 186 companies remained unchanged.

In the upward trend of the capital market index which started on July 31, Orion and Beximco group companies which play a major role, the price of Beximco rose the previous day and Orion fell.

However, a complete opposite picture was seen on Thursday. On this day, the prices of Beximco group companies decreased and Orion group companies increased.

The miscellaneous sector has played a major role behind this rise in transactions. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 200.89 crore, which is 17.81 percent of the total turnover.

The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector was at the second position with Tk 167.8 crore turnover, followed by engineering sector at Tk 135.1 crore.

Shares of Beximco Limited were the most-traded by value on the DSE as its shares worth Tk 110.72 crore were traded on the day.

Orion Pharma, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 99.10 crore followed by Eastern Housing, BBS, Shinepukur Ceramics, JHRML, BDCOM Online, Monospool, BPML and ADN Telecom.

Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) increased by 9 point to 19,189 and securities worth Tk 87.25 crore were traded on the day.
