The bullish trend in the Dhaka stocks that began at the start of trading on Monday continued throughout the session and settled with a sharp rise in index and turnover.

At the end of the day, DSEX, the broad index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, increased about 66 points or 1 percent to 6,600.

With this, the benchmark index touched the 6,600-mark point again after four months and nine days or 87 working sessions. Earlier, on May 10 this year, the index rose to 6,665 points.

However, the higher index didn’t reflect the movement of all traded issues. Only a few companies helped push the index up as investors were interested in selective issues.

On the day, 16 companies did not trade a single share or unit while four companies’ shares traded below 10 and 10 companies traded shares between 10 and 100.

Besides, there are 8 companies whose shares are traded between 100 and 1000. Shares of 30 companies traded below 10,000.

While interest in other stocks was low, trading was slightly higher than the previous day with only a few companies holding shares.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES rose by 15.71 points or 1.09 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 was up by 42.59 points or 1.80 percent.

The DSE had a turnover of Tk 1,990 crore, which is about Tk 176 crore more than the previous session.

On the day, shares of the 371 companies were traded, of which only 88 firms gained, 155 issues lost and 128 companies remained unchanged.

The miscellaneous sector played a major role in this rise in index and transactions. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 474.7 crore, which is 24.83 percent of the total turnover.

The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector was at the second position with Tk 404.98 crore turnover, followed by the engineering sector at Tk 179.7 crore.

However, the shares of Beximco Limited traded the most by value on the DSE on the day as a single company. A total of shares worth Tk 278.69 crore of the company were exchanged.

Orion Pharma also dominated trading today as in the previous session. The turnover of the company is higher than the previous day but it occupied the second position in the top list.

The other companies, which placed on the top list are BSC, JHRML, Shinepukur Ceramics, Unique Hotel and Resorts, LafargeHolcim, Delta Life, Genex Infosys and RD Food.
