Dhaka stocks rise on last-hour demand

In a sudden push in the final hour of trading on Monday, the country’s capital market managed to reverse its previous day’s downtrend to end in green.

Continuing with the trend of the last five working days, trading in the capital market started slow on the day. The turnover in the first four hours of trading on the main stock exchange, Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) somehow surpassed Tk 500 crore.

However, in the last 30 minutes, the whole picture changed.

Shares worth Tk 200 crore were traded on the DSE within 30 minutes from 2:00pm to 2:30pm. At this time the key index also rose from a negative position to a positive.

At half-past one, the DSEX index was 3 points lower than the previous working day and was gradually declining. But from there the index increased by 22 points in the last one hour.

As a result, DSEX, the benchmark index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange, went up over 19 points or 0.30 percent to settle the day at 6,320.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES rose by 1.93 points or 0.14 percent, and the blue-chip DS-30 decreased by 1.38 points or 0.06 percent.

At the end of trading, the DSE had a turnover of Tk 700.76 crore, which is Tk 106.39 crore more than the previous session.

Shares of the 382 companies traded on the day, of which 237 firms gained, 91 lost and 54 remained unchanged.

The textile sector rose to the top position in terms of transactions. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 125.01 crore, which is 20.05 percent of the total turnover.

The miscellaneous sector was at the second position with Tk 74.4 crore turnover, followed by the pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector at Tk 62.2 crore.

Shares of Beximco Limited were the most traded by value on the DSE as its shares worth Tk 46.04 crore were traded on the day.

Shinepukur Ceramics, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 28.41 crore followed by Fu-Wang Food, JHRML, Fu-Wang ceramics, Salvo Chemical, LRBDL, Malek Spinning, Sonargaon Textile and Monno Fabrics.

Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) increased over 43 points to 18,616 and securities worth Tk 61.20 crore were traded on the day.
