DSE turnover declines, but index rebounds

All indices of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) rebounded Thursday against a slump in turnover, shares, and unit prices of most companies.

The main attraction of the day was Beximco’s Sukuk Bond which made its debut on the day. This bond has been a matter of hot discussion for the last one year.

Although the dividend bond is attractive by any measure, owning one is beyond the reach of the general investors.

On the opening day of the much-talked-about Tk 3,000 crore Green Sukuk, only Tk 33 crore of bonds were exchanged.

The benchmark index of Dhaka bourse, DSEX, rose by over 21 points, or 0.30 percent, to 7,017 points.

Among other DSE indices, shariah-based DSES went up by about 7 points, or 0.46 percent, and the blue-chip DS-30 increased by over 9 points, or 0.36 percent.

Power Grid Company had the biggest role in the rise of the index on the day. The index added 4.97 points due to the company.

Apart from this, the index increased by 4.31 points by GP and 2.59 points for Titas Gas.

In addition, BSC, BSCCL, Square Pharma, BRAC Bank, LafargeHolcim Cement, Fareast Life and Linde BD added about 11 points to the index.

Meanwhile, the DSE had a turnover of Tk 1,242.84 crore, which is Tk 421.33 crore less than the previous session.

Trading on the DSE started on the day with increase of the share and unit prices of most of the companies.

As a result, the key price index increased by 22 points from the start of trading. But, within half an hour of the transaction, the index turned negative.

However, the index did not take long to turn around. As a result, at the end of the first hour of trading, the main price index increased by 36 points.

Then investors had expected a big upswing in the stock market at the end of the day. But in the last two hours, several companies lost their prices and the big rise of the index remained static.

The Fuel and Power sector had the top position in terms of turnover. The total turnover of this sector was Tk 167.1 crore, which is 14.49 percent of the total turnover.

The Miscellaneous sector was at the second-highest position of turnover, where traded Tk 146.5 crore and Engineering sector was at third position with transaction worth Tk 115.3 crore.

Of the shares of 378 companies traded on the day, 167 firms saw a fall in prices, 156 firms witnessed an increase, and 55 remained unchanged.

Shares of BSC were the most-traded company on the DSE on Thursday followed by Power Grid, Beximco Limited, Paramount Textile, RAK Ceramic, Fortune Shoes, Titas Gas, Fareast Life, Lovello and Peninsula. 

Meanwhile, CASPI, the overall index of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), increased by over 48 points to 20,545 points and securities worth Tk 42.29 crore were traded on the day.
