Stocks edge up amid low turnover

All indices edged up on Sunday amid the turnover dipping below Tk 1,000 crore after three working days.

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) had a turnover of Tk 894.98 crore on the day, down by 350.21 crore or 28.12 percent from the previous session.

Market insiders said the investors are holding back to see the outcome of the upcoming meeting of the finance ministry, the Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission (BSEC) and the Bangladesh Bank (BB).

As a result, turnover has declined as share transactions have declined, they said.

DSEX, the benchmark index of DSE, increased by 29.42 points, or 0.42 percent, to close the day at 6,965.63.

The Shariah-based index DSES was up by 2.15 points or 0.14 percent and the blue-chip DSE-30 index increased by 2.31 points or 0.08 percent.

Shares of the insurance sector 100 percent increase in price on the day. After several days, the shares of 39 companies traded in the insurance sector have risen.

However, the number of transactions was not very high. The total turnover in the insurance sector was Tk 57.8 crore, which is 6.55 percent of the total turnover.

On the other hand, in the banking sector, the rate of increase was low (34.38 percent) but topped transactions.

On the day, shares worth Tk 179.5 crore were traded in the banking sector, accounting for 20.34 percent of the total transactions.

Walton contributed the most to the growth of the index. The company’s share price rose 3.4 percent. As a result, the company added 10.23 points to the index.

Besides, GP 3.85 points, BATBC 3.54 points, Robi 2.71 points and ACME Laboratories 0.66 points added to the index.

Of the shares of 373 companies traded on the day on DSE, 245 companies or 65.68 percent witnessed an increase, 79 companies or 21.18 percent saw a fall in prices and 49 companies or 13.14 percent remained unchanged.

Shares of Beximco Limited were the most traded company on the DSE on Sunday followed by One Bank, First Security Islami Bank, Delta Life, Power Grid, Fortune Shoes, IFIC Bank, Orion Pharma, Sonali Paper and ACMEPL.

Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) increased by 161.05 points to 20,415.92 points and securities worth Tk 63.32 crore have been traded.
