Covid-19: Bangladesh records 78 deaths, 3,031 new cases

Bangladesh recorded 78 more coronavirus related deaths and 3,031 new cases in the last 24 hours till Tuesday morning as the country grapples with the second wave of the deadlier virus.

The death toll of the virus rose to 11,228 while the caseload reached 7, 51,659, Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) came up with the disclosure in a handout this afternoon.

The infection rate of the virus slightly declined to 12.51 percent from Monday’s 12.82 percent and Sunday’s 11.33 percent. The infection rate was 21 percent on April 15.

Besides, the mortality rate of the virus remains static at 1.49 percent for the last two consecutive days.

Some 5, 234 patients were declared free from the infection in the same period taking the recovery to 6, 66,927 with 88.73 percent recovery rate, the DGHS said in the handout.

24,237 samples were tested at 358 government authorised laboratories and of them, 3,031 cases were found positive in the last 24 hours.

the deceased, 45 were men while 33 were women and of them, two died at houses in the same time, the DGHS said.

Meanwhile, Worldometer, a reference website that provides counters and real-time statistics for diverse topics, has recorded 31, 36, 554 deaths so far caused by the virus and 14, 85, 77, 921 cases worldwide.

Since the outbreak of the virus in China in 2019, the health authority in Bangladesh first confirmed the first case on March 8, 2020 and recorded the first death caused by the virus on March 18 in the same year.

Experts have raised concerns about the spread of more contagious and deadlier variants of the virus.

The icddr,b, in a recent research, has claimed to have found the South African variant for 81 percent of the positive cases in Dhaka since the third-week of March this year.
