NBR steps in to reduce container congestion

To minimise the container gridlock at Chattogram Port, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) has ordered the authorities to move imported merchandise containers to 19 different depots outside the terminal.

The decision came this afternoon as NBR responded to a Shipping Ministry request to move containers to various warehouses from the port yard to lessen congestion. The Chattogram Port had also urged NBR to this end prior to the July 23 lockdown.

Because of the closure of the apparel factories together with other industrial plants due to recurring 14-day lockdown, the port is about to face a space crisis.

Therefore, the Port authorities had sent a memo to the NBR through the Shipping Ministry and after reviewing the proposal, BNR approved it today (Sunday).

Omar Faruk, secretary of Chattogram Port Authority confirmed Business Insider Bangladesh the news.

He said, “The decision helped us to minimise the container gridlock in the Port premises and keep the operations smooth.”

According to Port rules, only 38 types of goods can be stored to various container depots outside of the port before being released; the rest of the imported items can be released from the port yard.

per new rule, respective importers can take delivery of their goods from different container depots subject to proper scanning and 100 percent feasibility test, until 31 August.

Meanwhile, the Chattogram Port is handling 3000-3500 TEUs daily and due to the shutdown of apparel productions the capacity is diminishing. As a result, authorities might face some space shortage in the middle of the lockdown, port authorities apprehended. Till date there are some 42,000 containers kept in the port yard and its maximum capacity is 49,000 containers, respectively.
