Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) began exploring its Zakiganj gas well Tuesday by firing a drill stitch test (DST) in the well.

The managing director of the company, Mohammad Ali, confirmed the news to the Business Insider Bangladesh. He said, “I don’t want to say anything right now. But we are observing… and hopeful for something better.”

There is a pressure of 6,000 PSI (per square inch) inside the well while the floating pressure is more than 13,000 PSI, according to BAPEX.

Officials said this is the primary level test and that there is a possibility of getting methane gas in 4 layers beneath the field. The new gas field along the Indo-Bangladesh border is 32 km off Beanibazar in Sylhet.

A total of 27 gas fields have been discovered in Bangladesh, so far. Zakiganj could be the 28th potential well in Bangladesh.

The proven reserve in the gas field is 21.4 trillion cubic feet while the potential reserves is 6 TCF. Of this, about 18 TCF has already been extracted.
