CPD proposes Tk 17,568 as minimum wages for RMG workers

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has proposed Tk 17,568 as minimum wages for the country's RMG workers considering the uptrend in the price of essentials and the high cost of living.
The minimum wage for the RMG workers is currently now Tk 8,000, reports BSS.
The CPD said if the foreign buyers of RMG items can pay 7 cent extra for per item, then the RMG owners would not fall under pressure to implement such possible higher wage.
The civil society think tank made the proposal at a dialogue on "Fixing minimum wages at the RMG sector: Observation and proposal" held at a city hotel.
They said that they have conducted the study on some 228 workers of 76 garment factories. CPD research director Khandaker Golam Moazzem and senior research director Tamim Ahmed made the keynote presentation.
BGMEA president Faruque Hassan, BKMEA executive president Mohammad Hatem, representative from the owners at the Minimum Wage Board Siddiqur Rahman, Workers representative at the Minimum Wage Board Sirajul Islam Rony spoke, among others, on the occasion.
