The cabinet has asked Bangladesh Bank to clarify accounts of various videos being displayed on social media, claiming the poor state of some commercial banks in the country.

Cabinet Secretary Khandker Anwarul Islam on Monday told journalists that the central Bangladesh Bank should investigate and let all know if those video assertions were accurate or not.

“Bangladesh Bank should explain what is going on and verify the accuracy of these videos,” Anwarul said after the cabinet meeting.

The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The Cabinet secretary said, “We have already told them (BB) and they have this scenario... (to be fact-checked).

He said he was watching such videos which needed to be verified.

Meanwhile, after the secretary committee meeting on Sunday, the cabinet secretary had told journalists that there was a discussion without prior agenda about the banking sector situation and instructions were issued to the banking and finance division to this end to make a report.

“There is so much talk going around (about the state of some banks), let us know the real scenario soon,” he had asked officials concerned.

On November 24, a Bangla newspaper published a story headlined “Bhayankar November (Dreadful November) for Islami Bank”. It said a gang of swindlers has withdrawn Tk 2,000 crore from Islami Bank Bangladesh Limited (IBBL) using two companies that only exist on documents.
