RTHD seeks fund boost to complete mega projects on time

The Road Transport and Highway Division (RTHD) has proposed to step up its expenditure by more than 45% higher than the allocation in the Medium Term Budgetary Framework (MTBF) based on a four-year long investment plan for implementing the mega projects on time

The Road Transport and Highway Division (RTHD) has proposed to step up its expenditure by more than 45% higher than the allocation in the Medium Term Budgetary Framework (MTBF) based on a four-year long investment plan for implementing the mega projects on time.

It proposed to enhance the allocation to Tk 26,658 crore, an increase of more than 45 percent from Tk 18,650 crore allocated in the current MTBF, sources said.

The RTHD recently wrote to the finance division to boost the allocation to execute 224 development projects in the fiscal 2021-2022.

“We’ve asked for raising the allocation after assessing the demand for the next year at the grassroots level,” RTHD Secretary Md Nazrul Islam told the Business Insider Bangladesh.

“It will not be possible to complete the important mega projects on time without getting the required funds,” he said.

The RTHD is now implementing several important projects including Mass Rapid Transit that is necessary to reduce the traffic jam. The finance division is preparing to determine the actual demand for the infrastructure development projects amid foreign and local fund crisis during the coronavirus pandemic, according to officials at the finance division.

Last year, the RTDH completed a mega project on time, saving around Tk 1,400 crore. Under the project, three new bridges were constructed and three old bridges on the Dhaka-Chattagram highway were repaired.
