The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday approved a total of eight projects worth Tk 4,826 crore.

Of the total amount, Tk 2,341 crore will be financed by the government, Tk 2,207 crore will be provided by foreign source and the rest Tk 178.19 crore will be spent by the organisations concerned.

The approval came at the ECNEC meeting held at its conference room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of Dhaka with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.

While addressing the meeting, the prime minister asked all concerned authorities not to undertake any development project that will cause harm to nature.

The country’s coastal areas are very sensitive and all projects will have to be implemented very carefully in the areas, Planning Minister MA Mannan told reporters after the meeting quoting the prime minister.

About blocking canals in the capital Dhaka, Mannan said the issue was discussed in the meeting elaborately and the importance was stressed not to fill up any canals for the purpose of any development project.

Among the eight projects, the ECNEC approved a project worth Tk 2,580 crore to protect the country’s coastal areas from the adverse impact of climate change.

A project worth Tk 17.98 crore has also been approved for modernising the security system of Mymensingh and Chattogram jails, Mannan said.
