DSE market cap rises by Tk 21,000cr last week

After falling for three consecutive weeks, the country’s stock market has gone through a major upswing last week.

Share and unit prices of most of the companies that participated in the trading during the week increased along with the price index.

In one week, the market capitalisation of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), the main stock exchange, increased by over Tk 21,000 crore. Earlier, market capitalisation fell by over Tk 26,000 crore in a three-week straight decline.

Last week, Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) fixed the floor price (maximum limit of price reduction) of each securities played a major role in keeping the stock market up.

Along with this, the finance ministry’s consent to consider the purchase price instead of the market price in the calculation of the bank’s investment in the capital market also help pick up the market.

The market capitalisation of DSE stood at Tk 5,13,477 crore at the end of the last trading day of last week, which is Tk 21,364 crore more than the last working day of the previous week.

Meanwhile, the benchmark index of DSE, the DSEX was up over 331 points, or 5.55 percent, to 6,312 during the week.

Among other DSE indices, the shariah-based DSES increased by 66.99 points or 5.12 percent, and the blue-chip DS-30 rose by 119.95 points or 5.59 percent.

While all indices rose, trading volumes also increased. The DSE had a turnover of Tk 5,058 crore last week, which is Tk 1,889 crore or 59.62 percent more than the previous week.

Last week, the average turnover on the DSE was Tk 1,011.72 crore per working day, which is Tk 377.89 crore or 59.62 percent more than the previous week.

A total of 388 companies participated in the share and unit transactions on the DSE last week. Among the companies, the share price increased 373, declined by 7 and remained unchanged by 8.

Beximco Limited’s shares were the most traded on the DSE last week. During the week, the company’s share turnover was Tk 363.60 crore, which is 7.19 percent of the total turnover.

Shares of Fortune Shoes came in second place with a turnover of Tk 195.75 crore followed by Soanli Paper, Malek Spinning, Delta Life, Intraco, IPDC Finance, Orion Infusion, Matin Spinning and KDS Accessories.

Meanwhile, on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), the overall index CASPI increased by 943 points or 5.36 percent to 18,540 during the week and Tk 90.55 crore worth of stocks were traded.
