DSE turnover hits 15-month low

Investors were stuck with their shares as they were not finding buyers to sell their holdings in the Dhaka stock market for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

Accordingly, it has impacted the turnover, which is the value of the traded shares. Dhaka Stock Exchange data shows that turnover went down to Tk 319 crore, the lowest since April 5, 2021, or over 15 months.

DSEX, the main index of the DSE, also declined 63 points or 1.02 percent to 6,153 on the day.

This position of the index is the lowest since last May 22. On that day, the DSEX index was 6,142 points. This was the lowest this year.

Two consecutive days of major collapse in the capital market indicate that fear has settled in the minds of investors. The government’s move to address the power shortage in the country along with the global economic turmoil added more fuel to it.

Among other indices, the shariah-based DSES fell by 11.57 points or 0.85 percent and the blue-chip DS-30 decreased by 22.59 points or 1.01 percent.

Losers beat gainers heavily as 90 percent of the companies witnessed a fall in their share prices, while only 5.5 percent gained.

Shares of the 382 companies were etraded on the day, of which only 21 firms gained, 344 issues lost and 17 companies remained unchanged.

The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector rose to the top position in terms of transactions. The total turnover in this sector was Tk 50.9 crore, which was 17.07 percent of the total turnover.

The banking sector was at the second position with Tk 42.5 crore turnover, followed by textile sector at Tk 39.5 crore.

Shares of BATBC were the most-traded by value on the DSE as its shares worth Tk 10.38 crore were traded on the day.

KDS Accessories, which was the second most-traded stock, had a turnover of Tk 10.19 crore followed by Beximco Pharma, Grameenphone, Sun Life Insurance, HR Textile, National Bank, Sonali Paper, Square Pharma and Orion Infusion. 

Meanwhile, the overall index CASPI of the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) decreased over 214 points to 18,066 and securities worth Tk 11.70 crore were traded on the day.
