Private Industry and Investment Adviser to Prime Minister Salman F Rahman on Tuesday said the country is suffering from a lack of skilled workforce.

Rahman was speaking at a workshop on safety in the domestic factories in the city on Tuesday. The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries and the International Labour Organization jointly organised the workshop.

“There are a number of factories in the country suffering from a lack of skilled workforce. And, many entrepreneurs are now ready to go for production but cannot find skilled manpower,” he said.

While dwelling on specific service sectors such as hospitals, he said, “The hospitals are suffering from insufficient physicians. A number of companies need engineers while many are looking for skilled MBAs.”

Rahman said only the (social science) graduates are deprived of jobs because they did not work out proper career planning before graduation.

He gave importance to earning diplomas and vocational degrees instead of pursuing university degrees in random disciplines.
