The government has begun a drive to store data of some 45,200 non-compliant import substitution apparel and other factories across the country.

Earlier, a coordination committee was formed headed by factory investigation organisations.

The committee will monitor 27 sub-committees which will visit the factories and collect data on a regular basis, officials said.

The committee will also upload the data on a designated server.

“The committee will collect data and not make any decision against any factories even if they lag behind over safety matters,” said Salman F Rahman, private industry and investment adviser to prime minister, on Tuesday. Rahman was addressing a training programme meant for the 27 sub-committee personnel at BIDA hall room in the city.

FBCCI President Md Jashim Uddin said the country’s image was being tarnished due to deadly accidents in various factories. For the betterment of the business, proper safety measures must be practised by the factory authorities, especially after LDC graduation, so that Bangladesh can attract more foreign investment, he said.

After the Shezan juice factory fire that killed 52 workers on July 8 a public outcry was mobilised against the flawed factories. It was then the government formed a surveillance committee headed by Salman F Rahman to monitor import substitution factories across the country.

Though the apparel sector has adopted compliance guidelines in their factories due to pressure from the buyers, import substitution factories are reluctant to enforce proper safety measures in the respective factories, officials said.

However, the existing organisations which were entitled to monitor the factories failed to enforce safety measures.
