The cabinet committee on economic affairs has approved procurement of 9 crore (90 million) pieces of disposable syringes via direct purchase method (DPM) on an emergency basis for Covid-19 vaccination programme in the country.

Additional secretary to the cabinet division Mohammad Shamsul Arefin told reporters after a virtual meeting that “No one has the capacity except China to supply this huge number of syringes at this moment.”

Shamsul further said the reason for the direct purchase method is to make the procurement time as short as possible.

“On one hand, the Covid has to be controlled and on the other hand, without syringes the vaccine cannot be administered. Therefore, it has been brought under the direct purchase method.”

According to the proposal, 27.64 crore syringes are required to inoculate 13.82 crore people for prevention and control of Covid-19.

In order to vaccinate 2 crore people every month, as pronounced by the government, 9 crore disposable syringes have to be bought on an urgent basis. This is why China’s National Pharmaceuticals Foreign Trade Corporation has been engaged to supply the syringes.
