The Power Division has posted a proposal to the Cabinet Committee on Purchase for setting up a 660-megawatt power plant at Gazaria upazila of Munshiganj to meet the country’s ever growing demand for electricity.

If the government approves the proposal, a gas or LNG-based combined cycle power plant will be built at Meghnaghat area of the upazila that could feed the national grid for 22 years, said a source of the Power Division.

Two consortiums — Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd (CGN Edra) and Iniviation Power Limited of Malaysia — have already placed the proposal to implement the project, the source said.

If the government okays the project, a sum of Tk 37,443 crore for a gas-based and Tk 69,165 crore for an LNG-based power plant will have to be paid to the implementation agencies.

The regular weekly meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Purchase did not take place in the last week and it will be held on Sunday.

The proposal will be tabled during Sunday’s meeting to be held with Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal in the chair, said the source.
